Requirements vary by role. Field volunteers typically need relevant experience or qualifications in areas such as healthcare, education, or project management. Digital volunteers often need specific skills like translation, content creation, or digital marketing. Some volunteer roles, especially event or community ambassador positions, may not require specialized qualifications but benefit from enthusiasm and commitment to our mission. Each volunteer opportunity listing specifies any necessary qualifications.

Time commitments vary widely across our volunteer opportunities. Field volunteers typically commit to 1-6 months of full-time work. Digital volunteers can often contribute 5-10 hours per week on a flexible schedule. Event volunteers might commit to specific events or campaigns. We value transparency about time expectations and work with volunteers to find arrangements that suit both their availability and our needs. Many of our remote volunteer positions offer considerable flexibility.

For remote and local volunteer positions, there are typically no costs. For international field volunteers, UHAFD provides accommodation, in-country transportation, and a modest stipend for living expenses. However, volunteers are generally responsible for their international flights, travel insurance, and visa costs. In some cases, we offer partial travel grants for volunteers facing financial barriers. Digital and skilled volunteers working remotely have no associated costs beyond their regular internet and computer expenses.

Yes, all UHAFD volunteers receive comprehensive training tailored to their specific role. This typically includes an organizational orientation covering our mission, values, and operations, as well as role-specific training. Field volunteers receive additional training on cultural sensitivity, safety protocols, and project-specific skills. Digital volunteers receive training on our platforms and communication guidelines. Ongoing support and mentorship are available throughout your volunteer experience.

While many of our international coordination activities are conducted in English, we welcome volunteers who speak other languages. In fact, volunteers who speak multiple languages are especially valuable for our translation needs and field operations. Various volunteer roles may be available that primarily require languages other than English, particularly in regions where we work. Please specify your language skills in your application, as they may be a valuable asset for certain positions.
